Man seeks help fixing up town's Veterans Memorial

Millinocket Memorial

MILLINOCKET, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Millinocket's Veterans Memorial is in need of a face-lift and one man is doing his part to make that happen.

"The fact that they gave so much to their country means a lot to a lot of people." Mike Madore said. Madore is a Millinocket councilman and active member of the community. Two generations of his family are represented on the memorial stone and he takes a lot of pride in that. "I cant imagine having this memorial here for them." Madore said.

There are currently over 2,000 names etched into the stone, the only problem is that not one has not been added since it was placed in the center of town in 1987. That is why Madore wants to raise $30-thousand to $50-thousand dollars to expand the memorial site.

"It means a lot ot me, it means a lot to the people of the town, it means a lot to the veterans who are living to have their names on this stone." Madore said.

The plan is to add three more memorial stones as well as flags and proper lighting. He wants to raise enough money to not only expand the memorial but add names of any veterans who may have been missed; like Ron Wheaton who served in Vietnam.

"When those guys came home there was no raising the flags and banners," Wheaton told Madore. "And parade and I felt foolish." To which Madore replied "I'm going to take care of this, the people are going to take care of this."

"He's not on here but he deserves to be here, its important to him, its a sense of pride, its a sense of a long overdue thank you." Madore said.

It's people like Wheaton who make Madore that much more determined to honor all of his hometown heroes -- sacrificing a little time and effort for those who sacrificed so much for us.

"If we can get started in the spring great, if it takes a year, so be it," Madore said. "But it's a project that needs to be done."

Madore has created a Go Fund Me page. If you would like to donate to this project, click here.
