CONCORD, N.H. (NEWS CENTER) — The winner of the $487 million Powerball jackpot has claimed their winnings in New Hampshire.
The winning ticket was sold at the Hannaford Supermarket in the town of Raymond on July 30.
An attorney representing the winner Monday at New Hampshire Lottery headquarters in Concord said the person wants to remain anonymous.
“As evident from our presence, the winners would like to preserve their anonymity. At this point in time they are committed to using these funds for philanthropic causes and to make a positive impact on the lives of their family," said attorney William Shaheen.
The winner selected five numbers on one ticket. One of those numbers hit it big — really big.
“In 50 some odd years of being a lottery, this is the biggest one we've had in our history. In fact, the amount of money in question is more money than we gave away all last year," said NH Lottery Executive Director Charlie McIntyre.
It’s being called the second largest individual jackpot in world lottery history. That means only one person won the entire thing. It wasn’t shared with other winners and there were no other people in on the ticket.
The winner’s attorney has set up a trust. The first money from that fund, $100,000, will go to six charities.
The winner chose the lump sum. After taxes it amounted to $256 million.
