Officer shot and killed, home explodes in Brentwood, NH

BRENTWOOD, New Hampshire (NEWS CENTER) -- A police officer responding to a domestic dispute in Brentwood, New Hampshire has been shot and killed, said the New Hampshire Attorney General.

Officials identified the officer as Steve Arkell, 48. The part-time officer had been with the Brentwood Police Department for 15 years. He leaves a family behind, including two teenage daughters.

Officer Arkell responded to a report of a domestic dispute at 46 Mill Pond Road around 4 p.m. Monday. According to the NH Attorney General, Arkell was fatally shot upon entering the home. Several more police officers responded to the home, but were driven out by gunfire. The house then caught on fire and exploded, killing the shooter.

The NH Attorney General has identified the shooter as Michael Nolan, 47.

Flags will fly at half staff in the state of New Hampshire to honor Officer Steve Arkell Tuesday and there will be a 7 p.m. vigil at the Brentwood Recreation Center.

Investigators will be on the scene Monday night into Tuesday, and will give another update at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
