Old Town police tip program combats underage drinking

OLD TOWN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Old Town Police department is offering a new way to report underage drinking. A 2008 survey shows that 59 percent of Maine teens reported that they have had more than a few sips of alcohol in their lives, according to Maine.gov.

"On a weekend basis we are dealing with kids underage who are drinking and partying. A little thing could escalate into a big thing. They might leave a party intoxicated and get into an accident or hurt somebody," said Sgt. Lee Miller.

The program's slogan " dare to care" works to encourage the public to take action and report any underage drinking they see, said police. It lets anyone to send police a top through text, online, or a smartphone app. All of these options allow tipsters to remain anonymous.
