WELLS, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Two people face drug charges after police pulled over their truck to investigate an alleged traffic violation.
Maine State Police said an obstructed license plate prompted them to stop a black Chevy Avalanche along Interstate 95 in Wells on Wednesday night. As they approached the truck, troopers said they saw several objects being thrown out the window which they later identified as packages of heroin.
Troopers made two arrests including the driver, 43-year-old Richard Mathieu, and his passenger, 37-year-old April Umble. They were both charged with heroin trafficking.
Troopers said Mathieu admitted to them that he should not be driving because his license had been suspended following a previous incident of operating under the influence. That led to an additional charge of operating after suspension.
Troopers said Umble was also on probation for a previous offense.
