Firefighter dies while scuba diving

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The City of Portland Fire Department said the Portland firefighter who died while scuba diving Monday was Captain Michael Kucsma. His body was pulled from the Casco Bay near the Maine Yacht Center.

Members of Captain Kucsma's own department responded Monday after a fellow diver reported him missing around 3:40 p.m. They worked to locate, extricate, and resuscitate Kucsma. He was pronounced dead at the scene

The Fire Department said Captain Kucsma was a decorated 21-year veteran firefighter and an avid and experienced diver. He joined the department in 1993 as a firefighter and became a Captain in 1996.

Portland Fire said it is providing counselors to provide support to the family and Kucsma's co-workers, including those who responded to the call.
