Portland police investigate shots fired on city street

Portland Police respond to second October shooting.

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Portland police are investigating shots being fired near an apartment building this morning.

It happened on Gilman Street around 830. Police say at least two shots were fired this morning. Two men were seen running from the area after the shots. Two vehicles were also seen pulling away, a silver Toyota Prius and a silver or gray Honda CRV. Investigators say it appears the shooter fled in the Prius.

At least one of the bullets went through a window, into an apartment. Police have said it’s fortunate no one was home at the time. They say it appears the shooting was not random and there is not a threat to the public.

“It's comforting to us in that we don’t believe this is a random attack. It doesn’t negate how dangerous it is and how reckless an action it is. We are certainly are concerned that people are out there shooting. Shooting guns and trying to hit other people”, said Portland Assistant Chief Vern Malloch.

It's the second time in three days that shots have been fired in the city. On Monday a man was shot inside his apartment on Oak Street. That shooting is still under investigation.
