PORTLAND (AP) -- Maine transportation officials are proposing an in-depth study of what it would take to improve traffic in the corridor that stretches from the Maine Turnpike to the town of Gorham. The Maine Turnpike Authority and the Maine Department of Transportation say the goal is to relieve traffic congestion while improving access to the turnpike, Interstate 295 and Portland International Jetport. Four communities -- Gorham, Westbrook, Scarborough and South Portland -- and the Portland Area Comprehensive Planning System are being asked to join in. Officials say the study will take 18 to 24 months to complete and will consider everything from new land-use policies and roadways to bus service, biking, walking and the use of passenger and freight trains.
