AUGUSTA (AP) -- State budget hearings at the Maine capitol have entered a second week.

This week's topic for the Legislature's Appropriations Committee is health and human services.

Of Governor Baldacci's proposed two-year General Fund budget of $6.1 billion, programs for health and human services make up about 30 percent -- more than $1.8 billion. Most of that -- more than $1.2 billion -- would go toward Medicaid, the health program also known as MaineCare that is funded jointly by the state and the federal government.

The Appropriations panel plans to hear three days of presentations and testimony on health and human services this week, with Health and Human Services Commissioner Brenda Harvey taking a lead role.
