(NEWS CENTER) -- The debate is starting to heat up again over the Employee Free Choice Act. Wednesday, representatives from local commercial associations gathered in Bangor to speak out against the bill. They say the bill -- which would make it easier for workers to form unions -- would hurt Maine businesses.

Jack McKay of the Eastern Maine Labor Council, who supports the bill, says unions are more likely to support cost-saving measures to save their jobs.

But Tony Payne of the Alliance for Maine's Future says unions add to the cost of doing business.

"If you add the cost of union membership, add in lawyers, add in negotiation, add in management time, add in staff to just deal with those relationships, you're going to bring the cost of doing business up."

The Employee Free Choice bill was first introduced in February of 2007. It passed in the House but stalled in the Senate. It has not yet been introduced in Congress this session.
