BANGOR (NEWS CENTER) -- A group of environmental health advocates and moms gathered in Bangor today to call for action to stop the sale of baby products containing the chemical bisphenol A. The group gathered at the intersection of Hammond and Union street in front of a 20 foot tall baby bottle. The group is protesting the sale of baby products that contain the chemical bishpenol A or BPA. Some health studies have linked the chemical to possible risks for heart disease and diabetes. "I'm here as a mom and a business owner but mostly as a mom and it really shocks me to find that we can get toxic chemicals just by giving our babies bottles or sippy cups or food out of cans or infant formula," said Heather Vanfrankenhuyzen, one of the moms at the protest.
The US Food and Drug Administration says it continues to assess the risks of BPA but at this time it is not recommending that anyone discontinue using products that contain BPA . It has been banned for sale in Canada.
