INDIAN ISLAND (NEWS CENTER) -- Sunday marked Maine's first Native American Veterans Day.
Charles Shay, a Penobscot Indian from Indian Island says too many Native American veterans' stories were being forgotten or lost in history books. Shay is a World War II and Korean War veteran and was awarded a silver star for his bravery during the Battle of Normany on D-Day.
"We want the recognition sot hat our people and children can celebrate and honor what the Native Americans in the state of Maine have done for this state and for the country," he said.
The Penobscot tribe celebrated Native American Veterans Day on Indian Island Sunday morning with a sunrise ceremony at the Native at the Native American Church of Wabanaki Land.
