BELFAST (NEWS CENTER) -- According to state health statistics, less than 20% of all Maine high school age students eat the recommended daily allowance of five fruits an vegetables per day.

In response to what they call a "troubling trend", health officials in Waldo County are attacking the problem at the source. Teaching kids how to create the foundation for a healthy lifestyle at an early age.

Wednesday, the organization, Healthy Waldo County, partnered with R.S.U. #20 at the East Belfast School to launch a program they call " 5-2-1-0, Goes To School".

The program urges kids to eat five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, spend only two hours watching tv, exercise 1-hour per day and cut out sugary drinks and snacks.

Each participating class received a snack of locally grown apples. The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes planted an apple tree outside of the school to help remind kids to practice a healthy lifestyle.
