DIXMONT (NEWS CENTER) -- Earlier this summer the town of Dixmont proudly unveiled three new signs to welcome guests to the eastern Maine town. But officials say, last week one of the signs went missing.
Norma Sowers, the local artist who painted and donated the signs, recently discovered the sign had been stolen, posts and all.
First Selectmen Judy Dann says the signs are valued at $800 to $1,000 dollars, which qualifies the theft as a felony.
However, Dann and other town officials say they're willing to waive all charges if the sign is returned.
Dann says the people of dixmont spent a lot of time, money and energy to create those signs and they just want them back in place.
"Putting someone in jail or fining them doesn't get back to the community what we want," Dann said Thursday. "We want our 'Welcome to Dixmont' sign."
Dann says the sign was likely stolen sometime between Wednesday and Saturday of last week.
Local authorities say if you have any information regarding the stolen property you can contact the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office at (207) 947-4585.
