MILO (NEWS CENTER) -- A woman from Maine is rescuing stray dogs from Turkey and trying to find them homes here.

Christine Noke is originally from Brownville. She moved to Turkey a few years ago for her job. When she moved there, she saw that there were thousands of stray dogs roaming the streets. She started feeding some of them and giving them flea medication. Then she took several in.

She met Valerie Robertson of the Milo shelter "Paws" on Facebook, and together they, along with Robertson's daughter Katie, have been trying to find homes for the dogs in Maine. Noke said most of the people in Turkey don't have the same respect for animals as Americans.

Paws and Christine Noke hosted a fundraiser Saturday night in Milo for the dogs.
