ORONO (NEWS CENTER) -- The saying is, "It takes a village." And volunteer organizations say that's true with pretty much anything. Which is why they're always looking for help.

More than 300 volunteers and their organizations were in Orono Tuesday for the 22nd Annual Blaine House Conference on Volunteerism. The Maine Commission For Community Service invited people to learn how to use social media to recruit volunteers, what volunteering opportunities are available around the state, and to meet each other.

This year's attendance of 310 is the most ever. Organizers say there may be a direct correlation to the economy.

"The value of volunteers has always been consistent. But maybe people in a down economy are starting to really recognize what assets they can be to their organization," said Rochelle Runge, a spokesperson for the commission. "Volunteers work every day in your community to make it a better place. And if everybody did their part to make community a better place, Maine would be an even more awesome place to live than it already is."
