BANGOR (NEWS CENTER) -- One thousand pink tulip bulbs went into the ground in Bangor, Lewiston, and Norway as part of a campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer.

It's part of the Maine Cancer Foundation's Pink Tulip Project. This is the third year of the project.

Each fall, volunteers plant pink tulip bulbs in public locations in cities across Maine. The pink tulips emerge in the spring as a symbol of hope for breast cancer survivors.

Oxford Networks has funded the purchase of those tulip bulbs. This year it offered up it's offices in Lewiston, Norway and Bangor as additional sites for the pink tulips.

"Having lost a spouse to cancer, the way that it impacts on families is profound," said Bangor City Council Chair Gerry Palmer. "When we drive by in the springtime and see evertyhing in blossom we can hope that we spring anew."
