BANGOR (NEWS CENTER) -- Supporters of a repeal on same sex marriage say their political signs are disappearing off lawns in the greater Bangor area.

Jean Barry has a car full of new "Yes on One" signs that she is busy putting up. She says her husband called her Tuesday morning to say five signs had been vandalized in front of St. Marys Church in Bangor. Barry says these aren't the first signs she's had to replace.

"These signs have stayed up fortunately for two weeks surprisingly because all the downtown Bangor signs have been taken at least once. They've been stolen," Barry said.

In Orrington, authorities say they recently caught a pair of sign thieves red handed.

At 11 oclock Friday night, during a routine patrol Penobscot County Sheriff's Deputies spotted a man and woman in a pickup truck along the side the road. Deputies say they caught the pair with eleven stolen "Yes on One signs in the back of their truck.

"We usually don't get a chance to catch them because it gets reported the next day but our officers were in the right place at the right time so it worked out very well," said Sgt. Jon Carson, Penobscot County Sheriff's Deputy.

19 year old Elise Pelletier of Carmel and 21 year old Shane Davis of Bucksport were summonsed for removal of political signs, which is a civil violation, punishable by a fine

They also face a misdemeanor theft charge which carries a maximum sentence of up to 6 months in jail.
