HARRISON (NEWS CENTER) -- Youth Hunting day is the unofficial start of deer hunting season here in Maine.

Saturday young hunters got a chance to hunt deer a week before the season opens to all hunters.  It is also an excellent time for them to learn hunting safety tips from experienced hunters.

For 14 year old Brendan Waite of Waterford, Saturday was a big day.  Brendan bagged an 11 point buck in Harrison. The buck dressed out at 254 pounds.

Deer season officially starts next Saturday, October 31st for Maine residents and Monday, November 2nd for everyone else.
