PORTLAND (NEWS CENTER) -- A coalition of more than 30 groups led by the Maine State Chamber of Commerce is trying to draw some attention to a ballot question that seems under the radar this year: Question 6. Question 6 asks Mainers to agree to a $71.25 million bond that reserves money for all kinds of transportation needs. The bulk of the money, $55 million, would go towards roads and bridges. Other money will go towards improving rail, ports and ferries, and aviation. The bond issue also triggers $148 million in matching federal funds. Chamber of Commerce Director Dana Connors said this is an opportunity that Maine can't pass up. There is no formal opposition to Question 6. The groups favoring the proposal are: Maine Better Transportation Association LifeFlight Foundation/LifeFlight of Maine Maine State Chamber of Commerce Maine Section, American Society of Civil Engineers Maine State Employees Association, SEIU Local 1989 Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce Eastport Port Authority Maine Chapter, National Association of Women in Construction Northern Maine Development Commission Maine Tourism Association Maine Municipal Association Maine Chapter, American Public Works Association American Council of Engineering Companies of Maine Portland International Jetport Maine Campground Owners Association TrainRiders Northewast AGC Maine Auburn Business Development Corporation Federal Marine Terminals International Union of Operating Engineers Lewiston Auburn Growth Council Maine Inkeepers Association Maine Service Center Coalition Maine State Building and Construction Trades Council Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority Lewiston Development Corp.
