GARLAND (NEWS CENTER)-- A Garland family is homeless after their house was destroyed by fire on Thursday.

Fire fighters say the fire had a good head start on them when they arrived Dexter Road home. It was called in by a passer by who saw the smoke coming from the house.

Fire fighters did let the pet dogs out when they arrived, but there are cats unaccounted for.

Fire Captain Jeffrey Bellanger says it started in the kitchen area but they will be calling in a Fire Marshall to pinpoint the exact cause.

The home is owned by Joe and Christy Whitten and their 3 children. There has been a fund set up for the family. Donations can be sent to the Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union, c/o the Whitten Family Funds, P.O. Box 223 in Dexter, 04930.
