GUILFORD (NEWS CENTER) --The people in a school district in Piscataquis county have taken the unusual step of voting to close two schools.

On Tuesday, voters in the towns that make up RSU #80 voted to close the Guilford and McKusick Schools.

The McKusick School teaches kindergarten and first grade. The Guilford school teaches second and third.

The students in those schools will be moving to nearby Piscataquis Community Middle School, making it a K-6 school.

RSU #80 superintendent Paul Stearns estimates that closing the two schools could save as much as $400,000. He adds that he doesn't see those savings coming back to local taxpayers because of decreasing state subsidies.

Both schools will close at the end of this school year.
