DIXMONT (NEWS CENTER) -- Residents will vote Thursday night during a special town meeting at the Etna-Dixmont School. A moratorium on wind power projects has been in effect in Dixmont since last November to give the planning board time to research and develop a wind energy facility ordinance. The town enacted the moratorium after learning that a wind developer was interested in putting turbines on a ridgeline that includes Mount Harris. The proposed ordinance is more than 30 pages long. Some key elements of the ordinance include: Wind turbines can be no taller than 400 feet to the highest blade tip. They must be set back at least a mile from the nearest dwelling, unless the developer can get waivers from property owners. And they can produce no more than 35 decibels (DBa) of sound within 100 feet of any dwelling, unless the developer can get waivers from affected property owners. The meeting will be held tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Etna-Dixmont school. Anyone who is interested in looking at the full text of the wind ordinance can click here. The neighboring town of Jackson is also looking at developing wind power regulations.
