BANGOR (NEWS CENTER) -- Students at the Fairmount School in Bangor got a lesson in abstract art from a pro.

Maine sculptor Blake Hendrickson is teaching fourth and fifth graders how to make abstract sculptures with wood. Hendrickson uses small wooden pieces and glues them onto panels that can be hung like paintings. He brings the same materials he uses into the classroom, and lets the kids use their imaginations to pick the pieces and assemble them however they want. Hendrickson says doing abstract art helps the kids tap into their creativity, and it helps him to get inspired as well.

"It never fails that one of these kids grabs some of these blocks and assembles them in a way I never thought of," Hendrickson said. "Very often I'll go experiment with that myself when I get back to the studio."

A grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation is paying for the program.
