BRUNSWICK (NEWS CENTER) -- Hundreds of people got a chance to clean out their medicine cabinets by disposing of old and unused drugs Friday.

People dropped off medication at eight different locations, the drugs were then taken to Mid Coast Hospital where they were counted, separated and put into proper containers.

More than 15,000 doses of narcotic medication were collected and will be destroyed by law enforcement authorities. The rest will be shipped out of state and incinerated. Because of concerns about medications ending up in landfills and in ground water, efforts are underway to get drug manufacturers to set up a program to dispose of the drugs in an environmentally friendly manner.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Anne Perry of Calais will be taken up by the House Health and Human Services Committee in January.
