MONTREAL (AP) -- Maine Gov. John Baldacci says he's concerned about the proposed sale of NB Power of Canada to Hydro-Quebec and he is anxious to voice those concerns to Quebec Premier Jean Charest. Baldacci deputy chief of staff David Farmer tells the Canadian Press the governor wants to have a better understanding of what the deal would mean for Maine, which imports some of its power from New Brunswick. In the tentative $4.5 billion (U.S.) agreement, Hydro-Quebec would take over the majority of NB Power's assets -- including transmission lines to Maine. The proposal would give Hydro-Quebec more access to lucrative markets in the northeastern United States. Some fear it could cut off Canadian competitors from exporting energy to New England.
