CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (AP) -- A number of Cape Elizabeth residents are expected to launch a private fundraising campaign to come up with $1 million needed to build a two-mile pathway that would link the town center with Robinson Woods and Fort Williams Park.

In September the town council approved the concept for the path and allocated $110,000 for final design work and permitting.

But the Portland Press Herald says town officials left it up to residents to find the grants and donations needed to build the path.

Since then a group called Safe Access For Everyone has been exploring grant options and planning a private fundraising effort that's expected to be announced next year.

Officials say if all goes well, the money could be in hand by 2011.
