CARMEL, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Six people are living in a hotel after a fire rips through a two-family home. The two families lived in a barn that was converted into two apartments in Carmel. The 911 call came in shortly after 6 o'clock Thursday night. Firefighters thought they had the fire knocked down, but it flared up again around midnight. Crews still managed to keep the fire contained to one apartment. The other apartment sustained heavy water and smoke damage. The Pine Tree Chapter of the Red Cross is assisting a couple, and a family of four with two young children. The Red Cross provided the families with food and clothing, and put them up in a hotel for three nights. Emergency Services Director Gretchen O'Grady says this is a particularly difficult time of year to lose your home in a fire "You're losing food, belongings, you're having to deal with not only the holidays and what you've purchased for that, but also your belongings," O'Grady told NEWS CENTER. "So its really a tough tough time of year to have a fire."
The State Fire Marshal's Office determined the fire was electrical and started on the second floor of the home. The Red Cross is looking for donations to help these families. They can be sent to the American Red Cross Pine Tree Chapter at 122 Target Industrial circle in Bangor. The phone number is 941-2903. To donate online, visit the Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross web site.
