PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- About one hundred homeless men in Greater Portland now have brand new shoes or boots, thanks to a national event at the Oxford Street shelter.

Podiatrists with the New England Foot and Ankle Specialists came to the shelter Friday to fit men with donated shoes. Each man also gets checked out for any foot problems and walks away with a new pair of socks.

It's the second time Our Hearts To Your Soles has been held in Greater Portland.

The effort started in Pittsburgh in 2004 -- and now is in 40 states.

Those receiving shoes say they are very happy to know their feet won't be quite as cold this winter.

The Oxford Street Shelter is always looking for shoes to give to those who stay there.  You can drop off shoes any day between 1 p.m. and 8 a.m. at the shelter, located at 197 Oxford Street.  You can also schedule a time by calling Alicia Martinez at 761-2072.
