PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The woman charged with trying to sell her baby to a number of adoptive parents is scheduled to go on trial today.

Misty Sargent is charged with felony theft.

Police say Sargent promised to two different couples that they could adopt her baby if they would pay for pre-natal expenses.
Sargent received, according to police, $34,000 from the couples.

Authorities say she eventually told the couples that she was no longer interested in the adoption and gave the baby to a third couple.  That couple had previously adopted another child of hers.

Opening arguments are set to start today at the Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland.
