BUCKSPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- In the future, people living in Bucksport could have more options when it comes to heating and powering their homes.

The town is pursuing alternative energy sources for municipal buildings, businesses, and homes. It formed an energy committee in 2008, but the committee hasn't made progress as quickly as Town Manager Roger Raymond was hoping. Now he is pushing the town to look into several energy options, including natural gas, wood, and wind power. Thursday night, town councilors will review a proposal from a wind energy consuting firm that wants to do a study on the Miles Lane area near the middle school. If the area is suitable for wind power, that firm could build a community wind farm to supply energy to the middle school. Raymond says even though oil prices have come down, it's still important to consider other energy sources.

"It's more practical to be looking at alternatives during the time that your energy costs are lower because you can afford to pay for the capital costs that we need to change to another alternative" Raymond told NEWS CENTER.

The town council will not vote on the proposal Thursday night, but it will be asked to refer it to either the finance committee or the energy committee.
