BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The owner of the Coffee Pot Sandwich Shop in Bangor confirmed to NEWS CENTER Wednesday that he is closing shop for good on Thursday. Skip Rist, who is 72, told NEWS CENTER's Bill Green that with his bad knees and having worked since he was 13, it was time to close the shop. "The summer is too busy," he said. "I just can't handle the summers anymore."
The Coffee Pot opened in 1930, and has become a local landmark on State Street. Rist said he doesn't want to sell the business because he's proud of the product that his family has sold all these years and he wouldn't want to see it go downhill. "I'm the person who has to have my thumb on it to make sure things are right, just ask the girls" said Rist, laughing. When asked whether he had to be in control, he said, "Yes I am when it comes to the Coffee Pot yes. Other than that when it comes to the Coffee Pot definitely things have to be my way." The classic Coffee Pot, is a roll from Brick Oven Bakery, a layer of green bell pepper, five slices of tomato, lots of white spanish onions, salt and red pepper from end to end, oil to season it, topped by four pieces of American cheese, three pieces of American salami and five pickles.
