MONMOUTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The future of the Monmouth Police Department is in the hands of voters.
Wednesday at 6pm at Cumston Hall on Main Street in Monmouth residents are asked to share their thoughts on the future of the Police Department.
Last year it took 5 elections and 6 months to approve a budget for the department. During the process town officials realized it is unknown what role voters want the department to play in town.
There have been discussions of dissolving the force and contracting officers from Winthrop to patrol the town.
At the same time Monmouth's Police Chief resigned and leaves his post this week. There are 18 people who have applied for the position but before a new Chief is selected the town leaders want to know what type of chief will meet the needs of residents.
