PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) -- A tour-boat captain says a piece of the Memorial Bridge between Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery, Maine, fell into the water, almost hitting his vessel.

Bob Hassold says the rusted piece of metal that fell Monday was 4-feet in diameter.

Hassold said he had four passengers on the boat at the time.

New Hampshire transportation officials spent Wednesday inspecting the bridge over the Piscataqua River near where it empties in the Atlantic Ocean.

The 80-year-old span is on New Hampshire's list of bridges that are in line to be repaired or replaced.
