LUDLOW, Mass. (AP) -- Authorities in Ludlow say a 19-year-old man has drowned while trying to swim to an island on a local pond. The victim was among three teenagers who were trying to reach the small island Wednesday on Haviland Pond. Officials say lifeguards called 911 when they realized that one of the swimmers might be missing. The young man was pulled from about 20 feet of water and taken to a Springfield hospital where he was pronounced dead. The name of the victim, who police say was visiting from California, was not immediately released.
