OXFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- More than 60 people are suddenly without a job after Credit Collection Services in Oxford closed its doors abruptly earlier this week.
Employees at CCS say they were notified right before the end of the work day Wednesday that the Oxford office would be closing immediately. A spokesperson for the Newton, Mass-based company says the shut down was a business decision, and declined to comment any further.
Employees say the sudden news sent shock waves through the building.
"At least more than half have children, young children, and families to provide for, so it's really hard," former employee Kate Obie said. "There are also a few people in there that are couples that live together and both work there, so it hit home for both of them."
Obie says employees were notified they could apply for unemployment, and that there were job opportunities at the company's offices in Salem and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, but she says it's hard for many families to relocate.
