PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Sen. Olympia Snowe is giving some hints at where her leftover campaign money could go, suggesting it could be used for organizations aimed at promoting centrist views and consensus-building in Congress, and to raise the aspirations of women in her home state.
The Maine Republican who announced on Feb. 28 that she wouldn't seek re-election had those suggestions in a letter to supporters last week.
Sharon Miller, a longtime friend and adviser, said the senator has made no concrete decisions about what to do the money $2.6 million war chest.
Any formal decision will have to wait until Snowe completes her term.
It's a big decision. Democratic Sen. George Mitchell says his most lasting legacy is a scholarship program set up with $1 million in unspent campaign funds.
