St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals signed Rob Johnson to
a minor league contract on Tuesday and extended the veteran catcher an
invitation to spring training.
The 30-year-old Johnson split the 2012 season between the Mets and their
Triple-A affiliate in Buffalo. He is a career .201 hitter at the major league
level with eight home runs and 62 RBI over 245 games with Seattle, San Diego
and New York.
The Cardinals also released pitcher Kyle McClellan, a former staple of their
bullpen. Since 2008, the right-hander made 244 relief appearances, and he owns
a career 3.69 earned run average.
