AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - State of Maine flags may be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in Mount Vernon to honor Russell Libby, a leader of the organic farming movement in the state.

Libby died last Sunday at 56 years old after a battle with cancer. Libby was executive director of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association for 17 years, growing the organization into the largest state-level organic association in the nation.

Libby previously served as an official with the Maine Department of Agriculture. He also served on local boards in Mount Vernon.

The flags in town may be flown at half-staff on Saturday in his honor.
