BIDDEFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A vintage ice skating rink in Biddeford is getting a lot of attention since it opened for the season on January 2. However volunteers say they feared the rink wouldn't open at all this year due to a long-lived problem.
The West Brook skating rink has been a gathering place for skaters since the 1920s, many believe. Over the years, that pond has been eroding, say volunteers, and the banks of the bowl aren't containing as much water.
West Brook volunteer and Free Mason, Rick LeChance, says, "I don't know how we can make it happen but we're willing to go the extra mile, let's put it that way."
Knights of Columbus and Mason local chapters have been overseeing the rink and say the cost to skaters is not enough for this big of a project. They are calling on local donors and the city of Biddeford to help. Biddeford owns the property but has no role in operating the rink.
