MADISON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A 15 year old girl from Madison Area Memorial High School was surprised at an assembly this morning with an award from the Make A Wish Foundation. Lanie Howes has been hosting bake sales, raffles, and bottle drives over the course of the past year to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation. Make A Wish is a non-profit organization that raises money to grant wishes for kids battling cancer and other life threatening diseases. Lanie set a goal to raise six thousand dollars, and ended up raising double that. Thanks to her efforts two more kids will get ther wishes granted.
"When I was really young, my mom and I realized make a wish was a really awesome cause it was just a phenomenal thing to fund raise for and ever since I was really little I just started collecting money," Lanie said.
She's already started fundraising to help another Make A Wish child. So far she's raised another 1 thousand dollars.
The award she recieved is called the Brendan Batson Award. It is named after a 16 year old boy who was also a fundraiser for Make A Wish. His life was cut tragically short when, in 2001, he was hit and killed by a car while riding his bike. His mother, Yvonne, and brother Nathanael, presented the award to Lanie during the assembly.
