PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Another Catholic church is shutting its doors in Maine.
St. Patrick Church in Portland is holding its final Mass on Sunday.
The Roman Catholic Diocese has signed a purchase-and-sale agreement with a company that owns an adjacent shopping center. Church officials say the sale is expected to be finalized in August and that the buyer has indicated it plans to demolish the 39-year-old church.
Several parishioners have been gathering signatures in hopes of convincing the diocese to keep the church open.
But diocese officials say the sale is necessary to ensure that the other two churches and school in the parish remain open. They say the parish is running an annual deficit of $85,000, and that membership is falling.
