LEBANON (AP) -- Law enforcement officials say a helmet may have saved the life of a Maine man whose ATV tumbled 15 feet from a bridge in the town of Lebanon.

Wardens say the 32-year-old Sanford man fell into the near-freezing water of the Little River and the ATV landed on top of him late Tuesday afternoon.

Despite a broken leg, the victim crawled from the 38-degree water and used a cell phone to call for help. Rescuers say he was suffering from hypothermia when they arrived.

Wardens say the man was saved from more serious injuries Tuesday afternoon because he was wearing a helmet. The helmet was badly smashed up in the crash.
