ORONO (NEWS CENTER) -- Some students at the University Of Maine are putting their creativity to the test. UMaine is participating in the global innovation tournament.

Students from schools all over the world are challenged to use an everyday object to create a valuable new idea. This year the object is a water bottle.

Each team has to make a video of their idea and post it on you tube. This is the first time UMaine has participated in the tournament.

Teams made everything from life preservers to planters out of water bottles. Foster Student Innovation Center Coordinator Jesse Moriarity said the tournament teaches students entrepreneurial skills.

"The significance here would be they're looking at something that they look at everyday in a really new way and how can they create value witth what's around them," Moriarity said.

The UMaine tournament winners will be announced at a red carpet screening party. The top three teams' videos will be submitted for the global competition.

The winner of that competition will be announced December 5th.
