17-year-old Winthrop boy arrested, charged with killing his parents

Teenage son charged with parents' murder

WINTHROP, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — State police have taken a juvenile into custody after two bodies were discovered inside a home in the town of Winthrop.

The bodies of Antonio and Alice Balcer were found inside their home on Pine Knoll Road early Monday morning. Police said the couple lived in the home with their two sons. They are not identifying the teenager who has been charged for the killings because of his age.

Police originally called the deaths highly suspicious. Late Monday afternoon, they announced that a 17-year-old boy had been charged. The teenager's attorney confirmed to NEWS CENTER Monday night identified his client, the suspect, as Andrew Balcer.

The attorney also confirmed that Andrew's parents were the two deceased. It is still unclear, however, whether both or even one were biological parents of Andrew.

Police spent the majority of their time at the house Monday and said there was no threat to the public. Andrew Balcer is expected in court Tuesday in Augusta at 2:30 p.m.

He was taken to Long Creek Development Center in South Portland after being arrested, according to Dept. of Public Safety spokesperson Steve McCausland.

Police said Antonio Balcer was retired from the US Coast Guard and his wife Alice worked just up the road at the Winthrop Veterinary Hospital. They were both 47-years-old.
