Woman transported by LifeFlight after race track accident

WINTERPORT, Maine (NEWS CENTER) – A woman was taken by LifeFlight to Eastern Maine Medical Center after an accident in the pits at Winterport Dragway Saturday afternoon.

Winterport Dragway president Jim Watson told NEWS CENTER that a racer was loading his vehicle on a trailer after a race when his foot slipped off the brake and onto the gas pedal.

Watson said the car came off the trailer and pinned the racer's girlfriend against the truck.

Maine State Police dispatchers said the injuries to the woman were serious, but Watson could not confirm if they were life threatening.

The rest of the racing schedule for Saturday was cancelled out of respect for his racers.

Race officials said they expect Sunday's schedule to go on, but with some sort of fundraising program to support the injured woman and her family.
