ALEXANDRIA, Va. (NEWS CENTER) -- Anger, shock and prayers echo across Maine and the nation after the shooting of a Congressman in Virginia.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana was hit as a hail of gunfire was unleashed Wednesday morning at a baseball field where a team of Congress members was practicing.
In a tweet, Rep. Bruce Poliquin responded to the shooting and assured Mainers of his own safety:

The baseball team that came under fire was made up of Republicans. But Democrats like Rep. Chellie Pingree tweeted to let her colleagues across the aisle know that they all stand united in wishing a speedy recovery to Rep. Scalise:

The sense of unity extended not only across parties lines, but also across divisions between the chambers of Congress into the Senate, as shown by this tweet from Sen. Angus King:

Witnesses to the shooting praised the Capitol Police for their quick action to defend the victims and return fire. Sen. Susan Collins sent a tweet to show her appreciation of their work:

Outside the nation's capital, Gov. Paul LePage offered his well wishes from the capital of Maine:

Articles on the shooting that were posted to the NEWS CENTER Facebook page quickly filled with comments expressing concern and outrage. A discussion also developed about gun control with comments expressing both support for tighter regulations and opposition to more barriers for firearm ownership.
