c. Sadie Hawkins
"Li'l Abner" was created by Al Capp, who was born on Sept. 28, 1909. It was set in the fictional Kentucky town of Dogpatch.
The comic strip was printed at a time when it was still unusual for a girl to ask a boy to go out on a date. Since no boys ever asked her out, Sadie's father proclaimed a holiday when it was okay for girls to do the asking. Even today, Sadie Hawkins Dances are still held to give girls the opportunity to choose their own dates.
