Pres. Jimmy Carter was born on Oct. 1, 1924.
Just a few months after being elected, Carter gave a speech describing the energy crisis of the 1970s as the "moral equivalent of war."
Under his watch, the Dept. of Energy was founded in 1977.
Carter further showed his commitment to conserve energy by installing solar panels on the White House. They were taken down during the Reagan administration and eventually ended up at Unity College in Maine.
