BAILEYVILLE, Maine (AP) -- A Maine school district is trying to learn why a 5-year-old boy was left home alone by a substitute bus driver rather than dropped off at his daycare.

The boy stayed outside his Baileyville home for three hours in a drizzle Tuesday with temperatures just above freezing.

The boy's mother, Darlene Donahue, tells the Bangor Daily News that when she got home her son was hysterical, had a frostbitten ear and was afraid to leave her side.

Donahue said she doesn't want anyone fired, but doesn't want such an incident to happen again.

School Superintendent Barry McLaughlin said a second child was also left alone. He said the substitute bus driver was not familiar with the families' work schedules.

He said bus practices are being reviewed.
